PROJECT DETAILS:
John Carpenter had an interview during the Fantasia Film Festival recently, where he spoke briefly on this project being in development at Blumhouse. He adds that he may be involved in some capacity, but the project itself is still "down the road." This somewhat confirms the early rumors of the project being in development, though nothing official has been announced still. (8/24/20)

At the moment this project is merely rumored until something official from either Blumhouse or Universal is released. Supposedly it's being "fast tracked" and it's possible the studios are just trying to keep things underwraps until they move further in development, but until something concrete is revealed, you can treat everything as a lot of talk and speculation. (1/28/20)

Along with being a new adaptation, this project is also based on the new novel Frozen Hell, which is an extended version of the original short story "Who Goes There?", by John W. Campbell Jr., which was the basis for both movies. According to the Kickstarter that helped fund the new novel: "In 1938, acclaimed science fiction author John W. Campbell published the novella Who Goes There?, about a team of scientists in Antarctica who discover and are terrorized by a monstrous, shape-shifting alien entity. The story would  later be adapted into John Carpenter's iconic movie The Thing (following an earlier film adaptation in 1951). The published novella was actually an abridged version of Campbell's original story, called Frozen Hell, which had to be shortened for publication. The Frozen Hell manuscript remained unknown and unpublished for decades, and it was only recently rediscovered. Frozen Hell expands the Thing story dramatically, giving vital backstory and context to an already incredible tale."

This is said to be a new adaptation of the original short story and also a remake of the movies that will include elements from 1951's The Thing From Another World and John Carpenters 1982 movie The Thing.
