The Box
1

Norma and Arthur Lewis are faced with a terrible dilemma when a mysterious glass box turns up at their door. If they press the button inside the box, they'll get enough money to save their ailing son, but in exchange, someone, somewhere in the world will die. When the temptation to save their beloved son becomes too much to bear, Norma pushes the button. Immediately, a gunshot rings out somewhere nearby. Consumed with guilt, Norma must do everything in her power to solve a murder she has knowingly caused.

9.27.05
Finally an update on this project has surfased over at DC. Writer Richard Kelly revealed the following: "We’re still just trying to get the script right and make it early next year. Eli, I think, wants to do it next. We’re dying to do it; it’s just us getting the script just right. I’ve had the option on the [Richard Matheson] short story for many years. We both have so much respect for Matheson’s work. There are just so many horror movies that get churned through right now that we don’t want it to be in any way like a conventional horror film. We want it to be something special, so it’s very high, very high, on the priority list."

5.12.04
Co-writer Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko) briefly spoke with SciFi Wire about the film, saying... The Box "is about a mysterious box that arrives on a young couple's doorstep," Kelly said. "There's a button on the box that presents them with an offer that says they will receive a great financial reward if they push the button, but someone they know will die. Madness ensues, and that's what the rest of the story's about."

He continued... "It's kind of a cult story that Richard Matheson wrote long ago that was later formed into a Twilight Zone episode that I'd fallen in love with as a kid. Once I arrived in the business and had the opportunity to option the material, I thought it would be a great film, and Eli and I found a lead into the material. It should be a good movie. We'll see."

1.23.04
An official plot has finally been revealed thanks to The Hollywood Reporter.

11.12.03
Some time ago Richard Kelly did an interview with about.com about the film where he revealed the origin of the story saying...

"It is based on a very obscure Richard Matheson story that was never published but was ultimately made into a "Twilight Zone"episode. In the early 80’s when a new version of "The Twilight Zone"aired on CBS, the producers went back to a lot of the original writers like Matheson, Arthur C. Clarke [and] a lot of other big writers. Even Harlan Ellison, I think, wrote an episode. It was a really interesting kind of revival of the show, with new material. I optioned one of the episodes that Matheson wrote. The episode was called "Button, Button"and the screenplay that I’m working on with Eli, we’ve retitled it"“The Box." It’s basically a story that I’ve been obsessed with since I saw it when I was probably 11 years old or something."

- Warner Bros. will distribute.
- The film takes place predominantly in Virginia, 1976.
- Filmed in Massachusetts and Virginia.
- Originally set for a March 20th, then November 6th, then a November 25th '09 theatrical release.
- Principal photography was completed in March 2008, and it was officially delivered to WB right before Christmas 2008. A March 2009 release was briefly considered, but a Fall 2009 release was always a better fit.
- There is more than 300 visual effects shots, which required eight months of post-production. The digital work-flow of the Genesis was essential to completing these visual effects properly.
- Win Butler, Regine Chassagne (of Arcade Fire) and Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy, frequent collaborator with Arcade Fire) recorded more than 80 minutes of score for the film.
- Budgeted at an estimated $30-million.
- Eli Roth was originally set to direct, but he was replaced by co-writer Richard Kelly, presumably due to his busy schedule.
- Eli Roth and Richard Kelly worked on the script that was based on the Richard Matheson short story "Button, Button."

I saw someone say that this is NOT a remake, but it is... It's from the Twilight Zone TV show. I saw it when I was a kid and its no joke! It was one of the best episodes I had ever seen and it's stuck with me as an adult. I always would tell my friends (and still do) about the episode!!! If the movie is any good as an extension of the 15 minute episode, then it should be awesome! Very excited!!!!

That's weird, because they have the same music from saw during this trailer. Same song as Hello Zepp from the first Saw film. Looks good, but prob needs more gore than they make it seem it has.

Yep another lame ass film with Cameron Diaz, why of all actresses
did they have to pick her? Why not someone more beautiful like:
Jordan Ladd; Drew Barrymore or Christina Applegate? Because
Cameron is not all that beautiful okay.

I see the monkey paw connection more than any other. The only connection to hellraiser is the box. My story is inspired by Hellraiser in ways. The box is used a connection to demons just an in hellraiser but that is all. It's not a puzzle and it's purpose is completely different.
