James Wan is in early talks to direct the film, which is currently being described as a "grounded modernized retelling that leans into visceral horror while paying respect to the original classic." (8/12/24)

Will Beall (Gangster Squad, Aquaman) is on board to script the latest draft. (3/31/17)

Jeff Pinkner (Fringe series, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) scripted an early draft of the script.

Back when Breck Eisner will still going to direct, filming was originally aimed to begin sometime around February 2008 in the U.S. and Central or South American locations.

Producer Gary Ross wrote an earlier draft of the script, and is the son of original Creature writer Arthur A. Ross.

In 2005 Breck Eisner was set to direct after Del Toro wasn't able to.

Guillermo Del Toro was originally set to direct back in 2002. His idea for the remake would later be turned into 2017's The Shape of Water.

This remake has been in and out of development for over 40 years.

A remake of the classic Universal film with the same name.
