This project seems to be back in development, but it's now reportedly set within the same universe as the 1986 film rather than being a straightforward remake. Nikyatu Jusu (Nanny) writes and directs. (11/4/24)
It looks like FOX is still interested in the project, as they're in negotiations with J.D. Dillard to direct and co-write with writing partner Alex Theurer. The duo recently worked on Sleight. (3/14/17)
After FOX passed on Cronenberg's script in 2011 it looks like they never found another writer with a script they liked, so the project appears to be in some sort of development hell stage now. (5/10/16)
In a recent interview David Cronenberg revealed that FOX apparently passed on the script he wrote, so it looks like this won't be made anytime soon, unless they find a new writer and script that they want to move forward with. (11/21/11)
In 2009 David Cronenberg (who directed the 1986 remake) was going to return to write and possibly direct. Apparently his script was said to be more of a sequel than a remake.
When Todd Lincoln was still attached to the project, it was said that the fly in the remake would actually fly this time.
Todd Lincoln (Hack/Slash) was originally slated to write and direct back in 2003.
This project originally started out as another remake of the original 1958 film with the same name. However, it's now said to be "set in the universe of Cronenberg’s film, rather than a straightforward remake."
