Announced over a decade ago, this project has been in and out of development since. There was even a point early on that the studio was looking to make separate Korean and Chinese versions of the film, which would've naturally been confusing. An FX demo reel was released in 2010 by a company involved in the making of the movie (clip can be found below), which confused fans at the time, thinking the movie had already been filmed. The clip was merely made to garner more interest from potential investors, as the movie had still not begun filming. At the moment it's unclear what happened to either versions of the sequel (they most likely couldn't find enough investors), so the project remains in a development hell state until something more concrete is revealed. A US remake was announced in 2008, but never came to fruition. More on that here.
Writer Pil-sung Im also wrote and directed the Korean Hansel & Gretel and a segment in Doomsday Book.
It was once said that the budget was expected to be more than 20 billion won ($17.6 million USD).
Apparently the Korean studio was also partnering with Chinese studios to make their own sequel, separate from the South Korean one (so we'd have two sequels?). At the time (2008) they had set chinese filmmaker Ning Hao to write and direct, with filming originally set for sometime in early '09. It's said that the Chinese script (written by Ning Hao) would "concern a calamity caused when people ignore a monster due to their desire for money."
There will reportedly be more than one monster this time.
When this was still intended to be a prequel, it was going to be set "three years prior to the events of the first movie and revolve around the excavation of the Cheonggye Stream - an old waterway that runs through Seoul, which was recently reclaimed and restored after years of being covered by a highway."
When this project was first announced it was said to be a prequel, but after script revisions, it was later turned into a sequel.
It was first announced that South Korean comic artist Kang Full would handle the script.
Original writer/director Joon-Ho Bong won't be returning.
This project was first announced in late 2007 and was initially intended to be in 3D.
This is said to be a sequel to the 2006 South Korean film The Host.
