Writer/director Curry Barker has detailed his approach towards the new film in a recent interview, specifically mentioning how he wants to do something different, saying: "I think of it as respecting the source material. I absolutely love the original film, but I want to do something that's different. I'm not gonna stray away too far from what we know, but just making it stronger. Really, I want to lean into the uncomfortability of the family. I want to lean into the rawness of what's going on there. There's some really messed up stuff happening at that farm. I genuinely feel as if there's so much potential for that concept that has not been realized." Adding.. "Still, there's so much that that concept hasn't really leaned into. I actually feel like there's a lot to explore. So I'm really excited about it." (5/4/26)

The studio has set Curry Barker (Obsession) to write and direct this "re-imagining" of the classic film. The movie will be developed alongside a television series from Barnstorm's Glen Powel and Dan Cohen, and director JT Mollner (Strange Darling). The series is reportedly a separate project from the movie. No further details were revealed. (4/21/26)

Producer Glen Powell briefly spoke about the upcoming reboot and detailed his appreciation towards the property, saying: "I'm realizing I'm in a position in which, the things that I really love, properties that I really love and care about... Texas Chain Saw is one of, I think, the most brilliant horror movies. It defined the genre and is such a part of that era. I feel that A24 is a place that's really making such special things, and they're such a custodian and guardian of quality. And we just really talked to the rights holders." Adding... "J.T. Mollner, and we have some other creatives around it... they're just so passionate about what we're doing. They have a really strong vision. Everybody around it really cares and when you have that group mentality protecting something like that—I care about it, everybody cares about it—I know we're gonna do something really special with it, so I'm feeling very, very good. It was a long process to get there but I know we have something really fun ahead." (2/16/26)

A24 is officially moving forward with a TV series headed by JT Mollner (Strange Darling). A new movie is also in development, but it's still early days, as the studio seems to be prioritizing the series at the moment. (2/4/26)

A new report from Deadline indicates that A24 is close to winning the film and TV rights to a new installment in the franchise. The deal would see a series from JT Mollner, Roy Lee and Glen Powell, along with a potential Netflix movie (also with Roy Lee and A24 producing). If won, A24 would be beating out "a feature directed and co-written by Bryan Bertino with Oz Perkins producing, as well as a Taylor Sheridan-produced version of Leatherface." Jordan Peele was reportedly also interested, but that apparently fell through quickly. Deadline reports that this coming Monday (June 9th) there will be a bidding war for the TCM rights from Verve (the current rights holders). According to the article several studios are interested in the property. Here are some specifics highlighted from the article:

"Taylor Sheridan’s name has gained steam as having interest in the property. At this point in time, Sheridan would only serve as a producer on a future Texas Chainsaw Massacre project. No surprise that he’s interested as Sheridan was raised in Texas."

"In regards to the Oz Perkins’ version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, we understand the Longlegs filmmaker would only produce and co-write with Bryan Bertino. Bertino, who directed the original 2008 The Strangers, would helm this particular version of Leatherface, should NEON win rights."

"Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw is another new party to emerge with an eye on Texas Chainsaw Massacre, also in producing capacity. Monkeypaw has a production deal at Universal."

"We first reported that Strange Darling‘s J.T. Mollner and A Minecraft Movie and Weapons producer Roy Lee were kicking the tires. We understand that’s a TV a pitch aligned with A24, and will have Austin, TX native Glen Powell involved, but not starring."

"Separately, Lee has a feature film pitch for Texas Chainsaw Massacre which would be set up at Netflix." (6/6/25)

It looks like the rumored Texas Chainsaw Legacy report from last year was simply that—a rumor, as nothing has officially been in development. In fact, it was revealed today that Verve (who owns the rights to the franchise) is indeed looking to make a new movie, but are waiting for the right packaged deal to move forward. Deadline posted the news with the following info: "One of the parties, we hear, showing interest in reviving Texas Chainsaw Massacre is filmmaker/scribe JT Mollner and producer Roy Lee, hot off Strange Darling, their $3 million-grossing, 96% certified Rotten Tomatoes cult hit. If Mollner gets a script together, word is that Glen Powell would like to read it, for a possible starring and producing gig. It’s very early days on this; no contracts or attachments as of yet, and the Mollner/Powell combo is but one interested party of many (though we’ve heard that Lionsgate, A24 and others are expressing interest in that version). Also, don’t be shocked if Neon jumps in the fray after working with Oz Perkins on Longlegs, The Monkey and the upcoming Keeper; it’s looking for its next big horror film." (3/21/25)

A rep for Verve (the rights owners) added the following: "Verve represents The Texas Chainsaw Massacre estate and is building out a multimedia strategy for the seminal horror franchise. Verve has not officially submitted the property into any filmmakers, producers or buyers. Because this is such a hot and iconic horror property, packages are preemptively being brought to Verve." Back in February of 2024 there was a rumor that this would be called Texas Chainsaw Legacy and had the following synopsis: "TEXAS CHAINSAW LEGACY delves into the tranquil facade of Oasis Oaks, a gated community nestled in rural Texas. Amidst the meticulously manicured lawns and vigilant security patrols, our protagonist family epitomizes suburban bliss. However, lurking just beyond the confines of this idyllic enclave lies an abandoned property, home to the infamous Leatherface and his macabre kin. As chaos descends upon Oasis Oaks, ordinary families are pitted against the savage Sawyers in a harrowing battle for survival, where the lines between good and evil blur in a chilling confrontation of familial horrors." The news came from industry scooper Daniel Richtman

This is said to be a "reimagining" of the classic 1974 film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
