PROJECT DETAILS:
James Wan and Leigh Whannell both had a recent interview with BD, where the duo talked a bit more on their approach for the new movie. Wan was quoted saying: "It’s definitely not Spiral, it’s not Spiral. And I still blame Leigh for killing off Jigsaw, because it’s fucking hard to try and make any future Saw movies without Jigsaw." Adding... "Leigh and I, we’re not going to give too much away, but we don’t think you can make a Saw movie without Jigsaw. That’s the bottom line. And ultimately, we want to hark back to the spirit, what Leigh and I love about the original first movie. The original first movie, which is Jigsaw’s philosophy and what makes him tick." He continuess... "Ultimately, he’s a scary guy in the first one, and we want to go back to making a scary Saw movie again, with this omnipresent thing that Jigsaw had in the first film. But so it’s a really kind of like dig into that. And definitely we want to give the fans what they love about the whole franchise as well, whilst I think it’s very important we want to do something new and fresh that hasn’t been done before. That’s the sale. That’s my pitch." (1/30/26)

James Wan had a recent interview where he details his approach towards working on this new movie and how he wants to make Saw scary again. Here's what he had to say: "For me to finally come back to it, I feel I have probably the freshest outlook. I feel I can come back to it with a new perspective whilst knowing that with this next movie I want to hark back to the spirit of the first movie. One of the things I really want to do with this next Saw is make it scary again. I want to make a scary Saw—not just gory, but psychologically scarring, like what Leigh and I did in the first movie." Adding... "Leigh and I both want to recapture the spirit of that first film and revisit Jigsaw’s philosophy, which is that he goes after people who don’t appreciate their lives. If you’re a scumbag, but you appreciate your life, he doesn’t see you as someone who’s wasting your life, so I want to go back to what we touched on in the first movie with regard to that. At the same time, I want to honor what people have come to love about the franchise, whilst trying to do something fresh and new that we haven’t seen before. This next movie would be the eleventh installment, and there’ve been lots of films in this world. We need to do something different in order to reach out to a new generation that didn’t grow up with it." (1/27/26)

Blumhouse now owns 50% of the Saw franchise (the other 50% is still with Lionsgate). The deal has reportedly been made official recently and Jason Blum revealed that original Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell will be "brought back in the fold" and will guide the future of the franchise. Wan was quoted saying: "Saw holds a special place in my heart, coming back to this world with a fresh perspective is both thrilling and deeply personal. For me, this will mark a significant creative return to the Saw franchise for the first time since the early days, and I’m very much looking forward to embracing the original spirit whilst pushing the legacy forward in bold, unexpected ways." (6/18/25)

It looks like the problems behind the scenes might've been solved (maybe), as it's been revealed that Blumhouse is buying Twisted Pictures portion of the franchise. Apparently Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures each owned 50% of the property and Twisted is selling their half to Blumhouse. What's interesting is that since Saw creator James Wan merged his Atomic Monster banner with Blumhouse recently the deal essentially brings him back to the franchise. It's unknown how this new deal will affect this current project, but I'm sure more will be revealed soon. (6/4/25)

The film's release date has been removed from the schedule. It was originally set for a September 26th 2025 theatrical release. Despite that, it seems that the studio still hasn't quite given up on the project, as Lionsgate shared a message from Billy the Puppet (the dummy used by John Kramer aka Jigsaw), who said the following: "I’ve seen the rumors. They say it’s Game Over. You all should know me better than that. The game is never over." (3/24/25)

Hours after the initial rumor of the project being dead, THR confirms that zero movement has been made since the script was turned in a year ago. Co-writer Patrick Melton briefly spoke to THR about it, revealing the following: "We haven’t heard anything since May. It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There’s higher-level things at play." He continues... "Saw XI may or may not be made, but we have a very timely story in it, and I hope it gets made just because of that. It taps into the same themes of Saw VI, where you’re a citizen, you feel angry and frustrated with something, you feel like you can’t do anything, and John Kramer’s going to do it. The reason it’s held up is just, there’s inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can’t quite get on the same page." At the moment it looks like the project is on hold until the producers can figure things out and it's unlikely that it'll make the current September 2025 release date. (3/17/25)

Despite reportedly being in development, this project may actually be dead. At least, that's according to a source at BD, who revealed the following: "It’s totally dead. It’s 100% over. Almost a year now." Adding... "Everything went sideways in January 2024 … the producers started fighting." Apparently one producer wanted to move forward, while another put up roadblocks, halting production. In the end, "[Lionsgate] didn’t have anyone to smooth over the disagreement." Lastly, the source adds that if the franchise continues it would likely be with a different studio and would have to "start over," concluding that ultimately "greed and ego won." Keep in mind that this is just a rumor, but BD's sources on the franchise have been pretty accurate in the past. We'll see how things play out over time and hope that something official will be released shortly. (3/17/25)

Actor Tobin Bell had a recent interview where he reveals that Jigsaw will be back in the new film, saying: "I’m really excited about continuing to develop him. John Kramer is not done. There’s more to learn." (10/2/24)

Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton are back to script (Saw 4 to 6 and Saw 3D). Dunstan had a brief interview where he revealed the status of the project, saying: "We're writing XI right now, and Kevin Greutert is returning to direct. That's been since December, and that’s one where it's got something new to say, and it's angry." (6/10/24)

Originally had a September 27th 2024 theatrical release. (4/10/24)

Kevin Greutert (Saw VI, Saw 3D, Jackals, Saw X) is said to be returning to helm this new installment. (2/5/24)

At the moment there's no word if Tobin Bell or Shawnee Smith will be back, but it seems likely.

It's currently unknown if director Kevin Greutert (Saw VI an Saw: The Final Chapter, Saw X) will return.

Writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (duo behind Jigsaw, Spiral, Saw X) will not return to script this new installment. He was quoted saying the following via social media: "Pete and I are sitting this chapter out. Very excited to see this one as a fan of the franchise.  I think people will be pleased with the team." (12/12/23)

The previous installment was a prequel that took place between the first two films and saw the return of Tobin Bell as Jigsaw. The movie proved to be a hit, earning over $107-million on a reported $13-million budget. It was a surprise hit with fans and critics as well, receiving a lot of positive feedback.

This is the eleventh installment in the Saw franchise.
