PROJECT DETAILS:
Actress Milla Jovovich is set to star in the film, which marks her return to zombie fighting after leading the live-action Resident Evil franchise. Filming is aimed to begin sometime in March 2025. (11/2/24)

One of the film's producers was quoted saying: "We’re thrilled to share Milla Jovovich’s return to the zombie genre in this fresh and original way with Twilight of the Dead. With Brad’s masterful, visionary direction and Milla’s unique ability to command the screen as a bona fide action star with emotional depth and resiliency, there’s no doubt this film will be a riveting, compelling standout in the genre."

Director Brad Anderson recently said the following about the movie: "I see this film in the same way as successful post-apocalyptic thrillers such as I Am Legend, A Quiet Place, The Road and The Last of Us — genre stories that are as emotional as they are intense. When I first read Twilight of The Dead, I teared up at the end. Which is weird for a film of this type. But it has that kind of pull, that combo of horror and heartbreak that I love." (11/2/24)

Veteran makeup effects designer Greg Nicotero and his KNB EFX Group will create and lead the makeup effects. Nicotero began his career with Romero’s 1985 sequel Day of the Dead and was a frequent collaborator with the filmmaker. He also is known for working on the Walking Dead series.

Brad Anderson (Session 9, The Machinist, The Call, Blood) is set to direct. He was quoted saying: "George Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead may have been the first real horror movie I ever saw and its shock value, its keen social relevance, and even the means by which it was made were all hugely inspirational to me. George’s “indie spirit”, his Do-It-Yourself approach to filmmaking - outside of the main industry; on a shoestring budget; collaborating with family and friends - is exactly how I made my first film, and to some extent still make films now. Night of the Living Dead, and many of those that followed, wove together straight up horror with pointed social commentary. This unexpected combination is what elevated George’s films, and for me it is exactly what is most exciting about Twilight of the Dead.  This too is a zombie movie in which limbs fly and heads roll, but one that is also about social transformation, one that asks the question: What is it to be human? It is also a horror movie with “heart” and, dare I say, hope. As a filmmaker who relishes combining and reinventing genres, the chance to bring to life (so to speak!) this last installment in George Romero’s zombie franchise is a true honor and a privilege." (9/8/23)

Roundtable Entertainment has come onboard to help finance the project, while Romero's wife and estate manager Suzanne Romero is reportedly in negotiations with a director, and was in talks with cast before the SAG-AFTRA strike hit. They are applying for an interim agreement. Filming is aimed to begin later this year in Puerto Rico. (8/2/23)

At the moment a script has been written and they're now seeking potential directors. Suzanne Romero, wife of the late film director was quoted saying: "This is the film he wanted to make. And while someone else will carry the torch as the director, it is very much a George A. Romero film." (4/30/21)

It's said that Romero was reportedly dissatisfied with how Diary and Survival of the Dead turned out, as they were not what he had envisioned, so he began working on this treatment with co-writer Paolo Zelati. Unfortunately, the project was stalled when Romero passed in 2017. Zelati later requested permission to continue the script (with help from screenwriters Joe Knetter and Robert L. Lucas) from Romero's wife, who was quoted saying: "I gave him my full blessing as long as I could be there every step of the way for it to remain true to George’s vision. We had a solid treatment and the beginning of the script. I can 100 percent say that George would be incredibly happy to see this continue. He wanted this to be his final stamp on the zombie genre."

With the zombies seemingly evolving (from Dead's Bub to Land's Big Daddy) this project would answer what their next logical step was and possibly answer what happened with Big Daddy. Co-writer Paolo Zelati was quoted saying: "Everything started with my question to him: ‘Where do the zombies go at the end of Land of the Dead?’ It is no secret that Diary and Survival were not the way he envisioned the series ending, and George knew it very well. Twilight of the Dead was his goodbye to the genre he created and wanted to go out with a powerful film."

This is the seventh and reportedly "final installment" in George A. Romero's zombie saga that takes place sometime after the events of 2005's Land of the Dead.
