PROJECT DETAILS:
Now filming in New York. (3/13/26)

Sasha Calle (The Rip) has joined the cast in an unspecified role. (3/2/26)

Chiwetel Ejiofor has joined the cast and is reportedly playing "an ex-con turned priest." (2/4/26)

Young actor Jacobi Jupe (Peter Pan & Wendy, Before, Hamnet) has joined the cast, with filming aimed to begin sometime next year in New York. (12/16/25)

Actress Scarlett Johansson is set to star in the film. On her joining the project, writer/director Mike Flanagan was quoted saying: "Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film." Additional casting is underway, with filming underway at some point in New York. (11/24/25)

Mike Flanagan briefly revealed the status of the film recently, which apparently hasn't moved much since the last update and will apparently not be meeting the March 2026 release date that the studio has set. Here's what he said when asked by a fan on Tumblr: "Production hasn’t started, we need to finish Carrie first. No way it’s coming out next March. Nothing to worry about though." So it looks like Flanagan's priority is understandably the Carrie series he's doing for Amazon at the moment and will move on to this project once he's done. (6/4/25)

Mike Flanagan had a recent interview where he briefly spoke about this film, which has been described as a "radical new take." Here's what he had to say: "We aren’t making this easy on ourselves. (Laughs.) But I’ve always felt that there’s no point in going into a franchise or into a property that monolithic unless there’s something new you can bring. I chased The Exorcist very aggressively because I was convinced I had something that I could add. This is an opportunity to do something that I believe has never been done within the franchise — something that honors what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia. I really just saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made. I know expectations are high. No one’s more intimidated than I am." (9/6/24)

David Robinson, Chairman and CEO of Morgan Creek was quoted saying: "It’s an honor to be working with Mike. I think his vision for this franchise is going to stun audiences worldwide, and I could not be more excited to be working with him, Trevor, Jason and the entire Blumhouse Team." (5/30/24)

Producer Jason Blum was quoted saying: "Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it." (5/30/24)

Produced, written, and directed by Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Hush, Ouija: Origin of Evil, The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep), who was quoted saying: "The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting." (5/30/24)

Described as a "radical new take" on The Exorcist.

No relation to 2023's The Exorcist: Believer, which was meant to be the start of a new trilogy of films and be immediately followed up by The Exorcist: Deceiver. After the movie was critically panned and performed below expectations in theaters, the studio ultimately decided to cancel the sequel and any future trilogy plans.

This is said to be an “an all-new story set in The Exorcist universe".
