PROJECT DETAILS:
It looks like this project is back in development with Shanrah Wakefield (Heartbeat, Their Killer Affair, Killer in Red, Kidnapped) set to script. Original producer Neal H. Moritz is reportedly in negotiations to produce once again. Not much else known about the project aside from sources saying that the story "aims to be an examination of what an urban legend looks like in a post-digital world." (4/24/25)
This project was reportedly on the fast track, but ultimately became a casualty of the covid pandemic. Actress Katherine McNamara had this to say about the project: "It was sort of a new retelling of it, was what I can say from the script. Colin Minihan was the director of that. He's just a brilliant, brilliant mind who has gotten to be a good friend. I would love for that to happen. That cast was gonna be fantastic. A lot of friends on that cast." Adding..."The role was a role of a lifetime for me. It was so fun. But who knows, you know? It's one of those things that the studio is no longer even that company anymore and it's been moved around. It’s industry logistics where, in my dream world, it would happen, but I booked that job a week before the pandemic, so it was a COVID casualty." It's possible that it may go back into development at some point in the future, but for the time being appears to be dead. (5/15/23)
This reboot was originally said to revolve around "a diverse cast of college students as they navigate a series of bizarre deaths that resemble urban legends linked to the darkest corners of social media."
Sydney Chandler and Katherine McNamara are in talks to star, with Keith Powers (Straight Outta Compton) being eyed for a potential role.
It's said that this project is on the "fast track" with casting underway. (8/25/20)
The film will reportedly explore "deepfake technology."
It's said that the movie will introduce "an iconic new slasher for the digital age in a world where internet urban legends are born and move at a terrifying pace."
Written/directed by Colin Minihan (Grave Encounters, Extraterrestrial, It Stains the Sands Red, What Keeps You Alive).
This is said to be a "modern era" reboot of the 1998 film Urban Legend.
