This project is reportedly back in development with Focus Features, Hyde Park Entertainment and Mario Kassar Productions producing. Christian Tafdrup directs and is co-writing with his brother and frequent collaborator Mads Tafdrup (duo behind the original Speak No Evil). This project is apparently not a remake or a reboot of the Takashi Miike movie, but will be a new adaptation of the original novel, with Christian Tafdrup saying the following: "There's no need to mess with a classic movie without a fresh insight or a new way to intrigue and surprise. But if you go back to the source material there's things on offer that the vast majority have not yet seen and then to take those key themes and play them out modern day in the US is really exciting." This project has been in and out of development for over a decade, with the first news of a remake back in 2014 with Aussie helmer Richard Gray (Mine Games, Robert the Bruce, Murder at Yellowstone City) writing and directing. At the time it was going to follow the novel more than the Miike film, with the biggest change being set in the US.
Based on Ryū Murakami’s cult 1997 Japanese novel with the same name, which was made into a film in 1999 from director Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, One Missed Call, 13 Assassins).
