Warhunt (2022)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

DIRECTOR:

Warhunt is a horror tale set during the end of WWII, where a military cargo plane crashes somewhere deep in the German black forest, resulting in a ragtag group of soldiers to attempt to find the plane and retrieve the precious cargo. Unbeknownst to the group, they’ve set foot in an area of the forest that’s home to the supernatural, led by a few ancient witches who’ve been feeding off people (specifically soldiers) for centuries.

I’m a fan of period horror, especially ones that are set during times of war and coincidentally I’m also partial to films involving witchcraft, so I had certain expectations going in. Ultimately, (even though it didn’t really offer anything we haven’t already seen) I enjoyed it, at least to some extent anyway.

Mickey Rourke plays a Major in the film and despite receiving top billing, is only in the movie for a short period (mostly at the end). It’s mainly Robert Knepper’s film, as he leads the team into the forest, while Rourke stays behind at HQ. This didn’t bother me much since Knepper was one of the few believable actors in the movie anyway.

The aspect with the witches is probably the most interesting part of the film, even if it is a bit silly, but I like the filmmakers attempt to blend different subgenres together. It's essentially a decent a watch if you don't expect anything new from the movie and just want to shut your brain off for a while.

OVERALL:
Warhunt is cheesy, predictable, not scary and unoriginal, but it’s interesting, offers decent pacing, and successfully attempts to blend different genres together. I had a decent time with it, despite its many flaws.
