The Elder Hunters (2022)

REVIEWER RATING:
7/10

DIRECTOR:

It’s present day in New York City, and Elton Ramo (another badass performance by Mike Ferguson) returns to his home place, with a weathered look of disappoint as his city has deteriorated into the filth and fury reflective of a 1970’s Big Apple. It’s now a wasteland of squandered opportunities, taken over by drug fueled gangs, dealers and other thugs looking for a quick fix. Elton has come back to see his police officer daughter Janet, hoping to celebrate her birthday through a nice walk down memory lane. Unfortunately, he is met with a violent attack by a group of hoodlums who are wreaking havoc within the alleys of the city, pinpointing elders to beat and rob. Wrong place, wrong time for our protagonist who took some hard hits and is recuperating at his daughter’s apartment.

Not exactly the homecoming either of them had in mind.

As he painfully lifts his battered body from a potentially invalid situation, Elton is determined to cleanse his once beloved city from this inevitable collapse of civilization. And perhaps, to bring those brutal street criminals to justice, a la Death Wish style. While Elton is striving to regain his strength, this twisted crew admittedly steals directly from the mastermind behind A Clockwork Orange and plan a home invasion upon an elder woman (ok, she looks to be pushing 50…is that elder or just older?) Apparently, one of the gang members is a voyeur who spots her loot through binoculars, alerting his “droogs” to come in on this genius scheme. Alas, like our favorite villain Alex deLarge from Clockwork, the attack goes off course, and they bolt immediately after the vicious assault.

Leading to an uncertainty of whom to trust, the diabolical group scatter only to be prime targets for dad-turned-vigilante Elton to cherry pick them off, one by one.

The Elder Hunters contains a nice mix of revenge, torture, and even pussy-talk as they struggle to think up commonalities other than the rampant drug use that plagues the city. With the newly assigned “Charles Bronson” on their tail, it’s fun to watch the fight for Elton’s personal truth, justice and the American way. A new super hero has been born.

OVERALL:
The Elder Hunters isn’t an extraordinary story of bad city vibes, junkies and corruption, but Ferguson brings his disjointed charm as always, conquering “the good guy” vs. the entitled Gen Z’er baddie. And it doesn’t hurt to arm him with crude instruments to assist such as a hammer, wrench and power drill. Ferguson’s Elton shines with the rage of an upstanding man who was turned into his calling: Bernie Goetz 2.0. Although the low budget, forgettable cast and some sound issues cloud the film to a point of possible discontent, the pickup is worth the slow tide that takes you in. So continue to ride the wave. There is a slim chance Elton could turn up in a desolate city near you!
