29 Needles (2019)

REVIEWER RATING:
8/10

It’s been quite some time since the level of discomfort during a screening has escalated to such an extent. But it’s been achieved! To classify 29 Needles as ‘torture porn’ is labeling this film very mildly. This movie is so much more, although the graphic nature of this work is in fact…torturous and pornographic.

Francis Bacon is an ordinary man. Living alone, visiting the bars at night, scoping out the traffic for viable one-night stands, etc. You know…normal. (Insert sarcastic laughter.) There are several hidden elements as to how the mind of Francis ticks. The most obvious is thrown at us immediately as he freely admits that he has always associated sex with pain.

So, do those 2 factors always go hand in hand with the handsome Francis Bacon? I’m afraid so, which eventually leads into a darker and sinister rabbit hole that he enthusiastically puts on his mainframe horizon.

Word out on the street about Francis has been undeniably, a “sick fuck”. His reputation of needful brutality has traveled throughout the town within both straight and homosexual communities. Without sex, Francis needs to relieve himself of the missed pleasure zone through self-mutilation. Without the pain, the sex is meaningless and sparks his own disturbing behaviors of violence and depravity.

And then one day, Hans walks into his life with promises of providing the ultimate outlet: everything Francis craves, everything demoralizing, and everything he’s never even considered…all for the taking.

While exercising his newfound belonging amongst the filthy and perverted guttural underground in full colorful graphic scenes, Francis desires more. Constantly leveling up the scale of degeneracy, he makes no apologies or judgement for who he is and what he needs in this life. Pain and pleasure, simultaneously and without conviction.

29 Needles is extremely difficult to watch without moments of constant squirming and wincing. Personally, that only makes it more fascinating as Scott Philip Goergens pushes the boundaries from horror to sheer unpleasant distress and permanent damage. That always proves to be one hell of a journey!

OVERALL:
29 Needles is a prolific case study of one man’s hidden insecurities, brought to the surface by others who reside within this otherwise vulgar lifestyle. It is raw, brutal and unapologetic in every aspect. I give major praise to Brooke Berry who not only carries this main character from his secure surroundings where only a limited group of people are aware of Francis, to an open book of terrorizing truth by suffocating us with the pain he desires to stay alive.
