3 From Hell (2019)

REVIEWER RATING:
7/10

DIRECTOR:

At this point we all know that actor Sid Haig (Captain Spaulding) was in poor health during the filming of the movie, so Rob had to drastically shorten his character's appearance in the film. Apparently when this sequel was first thought up Spaulding had a much bigger role in the script, but all that changed due to Sid's health. Sadly, the veteran actor ultimately passed away a mere days after the movie's initial theatrical release (R.I.P.).

It's been almost 15 years since The Devil's Rejects hit the screen, which in my opinion is Rob Zombie's best movie to date. Despite the demise of the characters seeming pretty definitive it turns out that the villainous trio of Captain Spaulding, Otis and Baby all miraculously survived the shootout at the end of the movie and were sent to prison, which is where they've been until this point.

The movie details Spaulding's absence pretty well, though his presence in the film is still missed since he always offered the best and funniest lines. To make it a trio again we're introduced to the family's half brother "Winslow" (played by Richard Brake), who helps aid in their escape, leaving the remaining hour of the film with the siblings on the run to Mexico. Brake's character is a bit more level-headed and similar to Otis, while Baby's character has changed to become more of a loose cannon that causes trouble at every stop.

Rob did a good job recapturing the look and feel of The Devil's Rejects all over again and aside from some weird editing now and then (specifically in one sequence) it's not too bizarre or questionably directed as Rob's other recent entries into the genre. I think that's part of why I liked Devil's Rejects so much--it was wild, but stayed mostly grounded compared to Rob's other work. It seems like when he tries to get too experimental is when the execution begins to fail, in my opinion.. but I digress.

Much of that craziness and violence from Rejects is recaptured here, though we get a tad less of it in comparison. We also get fewer distinct and charismatic characters this time 'round and mostly just focus on the three leads, with the exception of a few new peeps we meet in the third act. In fact, the movie overall simply isn't quite as good as its predecessor, but I ultimately still found myself enjoying it. Whether it's the nostalgia seeing these characters back in action or what, but I had a nice time watching it.

OVERALL:
While it was nice to revisit this sadistic family again, the movie was honestly not really needed. It didn't offer anything new as far as these characters and their story goes; it's just more mayhem. Regardless, I still enjoyed it, though will admit it pales in comparison to its predecessor in many ways. Either way, if you're a fan of the other movies and especially love these characters then chances are you'll enjoy this.
