Capture (2026)

REVIEWER RATING:
9/10

DIRECTOR:

There’s been a recent surge in scary movies on an authentically ominous scale. Independent horror films that forgo elaborate effects to focus on delivering indisputable fear and suspense represent an effective approach for enthusiasts seeking genuine terror. Capture captures just that…ultimate chills!

A young couple is lost in the woods when they stumble upon a large empty home, completely isolated and extremely eerie. While the unnamed man attempts to get access inside to call for assistance, his exhausted female companion sits on a log, suspiciously searching for any signs of residence from a distance. Upon noticing that a camcorder is focused on her, she undergoes an abrupt transformation as her facial features contort, exhibiting signs of possession reminiscent of a zombie-like state.

We are immediately introduced to the main character and protagonist, Abby. Abby, who grew up in foster care and remains close to her foster brother Steve, is portrayed as mooching, unreliable, and promiscuous. She experiences a surprising change in her life after inheriting a hidden house situated on the outskirts of an upstate area, a property that had previously been owned by her biological parents, Steve and Cameron. As Abby needs money to regain control of her spiraling life, the plan is to visit the property for a short stay, and get it listed for immediate sale. Unfortunately, there is a sinister supernatural strategy in progress for Abby instead.

Locals quickly tell Abby to go back downstate. The current reputation of the allegedly haunted property stems from reports about its former owners—her parents—who asserted that Cameron, accused of practicing black magic witchcraft, was responsible for the deaths of thirteen individuals as well as her husband, her child, and herself. Abby begins to learn more about the mysterious dwelling in addition to the mom and dad she never knew. And perhaps that was in her best interest.

Upon entering the location, she notices a strong and unpleasant odor, a framed psychology college degree, several boxes containing home videos, and a functional recording device. Driven by curiosity, Abby begins her own investigation through these tapes in an obsessive manner she hadn’t expected.  Her dread appears suddenly in strong reactions to what she observes. "Mom” Cameron was a psychologist who treated patients in a home office and recorded these consented sessions. Abby notices a disturbing pattern and plays the tape labeled “Kevin?”, where the true anguish comes to life in a most devilish fashion. This is truly the stuff of nightmares.

Silhouettes move as she sleeps, ghosts materialize through the "lens into hell," and her imagination intensifies while reviewing terrifying tapes, all contributing to the alarming atmosphere created by the camcorder's sinister influence. The concept of a demon-possessed camera may sound far-fetched, but I assure you it is not. Through brilliant cinematic scenery, petrified characters who are paralyzed with panic, and the foreboding outcome of this twisted tale, prepare to be afraid. Be very afraid.

OVERALL:
Capture isn’t your average paranormal story. Its plot is constructed of extreme, unsettling aesthetics throughout the entire pacing of the film from beginning to end. The evil is both unsettling and remarkable, creating a deep sense of discomfort and anxiety at every turn. The primary benefit is the unexpected sequence of events that reveal the secrets associated with the digital recorder, in addition to her birth family. Each twist built up to one of the most dramatic endings I've seen since The Sixth Sense. Yeah, it’s THAT unpredictable. And it’s THAT good.
