The Hunt (2020)

REVIEWER RATING:
7/10

DIRECTOR:

The Hunt originally had a September 2019 theatrical release before getting delayed due to a mass shooting that occurred in the US around that time. Prior to that the film was already getting some backlash due to the political and social views the movie seemed to express. Adding to the movie's bad luck is the fact that it got released to small box office numbers, mainly due to the world currently dealing with a pandemic.

Ultimately, The Hunt was only in theaters for a week before the studio decided to release it to rent digitally, which is a blessing in disguise for people like myself that simply don't have time to go to theaters anymore. As it turns out, the movie is a surprisingly good watch and a fun ride from beginning-to-end.

The story begins with several strangers waking up in the woods with their mouths gagged and no idea where they are. Eventually they make their way to an open field where they discover a cache of weapons and before the confusion can fully sink in someone gets shot in the head. Apparently they're all being hunted by other people who pay to take part in this type of activity. The movie mainly focuses on Betty Gilpin's character (who's apparently a badass) and any other survivors along the way.

Right from the start the movie sets the tone and establishes itself as a silly satirical look at today's society, while also adding an exaggerated amount of gore and violence to remind the viewer that none of this is meant to be taken seriously. There's not a whole lot else to say about the film since it keeps things pretty simple and straight forward. In the end it's all nothing more than popcorn entertainment and succeeds in that respect, especially if you dig the dark humor that's prevalent throughout the movie.

OVERALL:
The Hunt delivers a different spin on an otherwise tired and overly used theme by giving us a satirical look at today's society with an exaggerated amount of violence and gore. I personally found it funny and entertaining from the start and if you go in not taking anything it says or does seriously then you'll likely enjoy it too.
