No official plot yet, but the film is based on the sci-fi war novel by Robert A. Heinlein that told the military life of a soldier named Johnny Rico, who moves up the ranks as mankind fights a war against alien bugs.

After almost a decade since the last update, it looks like this project is finally back in development. The studio has attached Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Chappie, Gran Turismo) to write and direct a new adaptation of the original novel. (3/14/25)
Back in 2016 Mark Swift and Damian Shannon (writing duo behind Freddy vs Jason, the Friday the 13th remake, and the new Baywatch movie) were attached to script.
A Japanese animated movie based on the novel was also made and released in 1988.
The original movie spawned two live-action straight-to-DVD sequels and two CG-animated movies.
This project was originally announced in 2011 with Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (duo behind Thor and X-Men: First Class) attached to script.
This is said to be another adaptation of the original Robert A. Heinlein novel and will serve as a reboot of the franchise instead of a straight forward remake of the 1997 film.
