Actress Scarlett Johansson gave a brief update on the film, which is currently still in development, saying: "It's a hard nut to crack. Harder than you think, because the ride itself, there's some lore to it, but it's... I don't want to say thin, but it is, kind of!" Apparently they're having a little trouble coming up with a proper story since the ride doesn't really offer much to work with. She goes on to add the following: "That's part of the mystery of the ride. It's been a fun project to work on, because it's a blue sky project. It has also proved to be a hard nut to crack. But, we'll crack the case of it. It's taking shape!" (6/27/25)
Directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows, Thor: Ragnarok, Thor: Love and Thunder, Jojo Rabbit).
Written by Josh Cooley (Inside Out).
This would be the second adaptation of the ride, with the first being the 1997 made-for-TV movie starring Steve Guttenberg and a young Kirsten Dunst. That movie was actually Disney's first film based on one of their theme park attractions, predating 2003's Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean.
This project was initially announced in June of 2021.
Also known as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, this movie is based on the popular Disney theme park attraction.
