Jason Segel is back onscreen, and this time…he’s getting badly beaten in a hilarious comedy horror starring Samara Weaving, Timothy Olyphant and Juliette Lewis. Who would’ve thought that this comedic actor could hold his own in such an intensely barbaric film? Let’s dive straight into this wild, darkly humorous story that bursts with extreme violence and delivers a chaotic, thrilling adventure!
Dan (Segel) is a one-time filmmaker turned commercial director who appears meek and yielding. Alongside his sassy, sharp-tongued British actress wife Lisa, they openly discuss their upcoming weekend plans with others as a lovely getaway to their isolated cabin where each anticipates “dangerous activities” such as a treacherous hike into the mountains vs a risky hunting trip into the nearby wooded area. What is occurring is the establishment of an alibi, intended to support their underlying motive for undertaking this jaunt. Dan and Lisa are secretly plotting to kill each other!
The relationship between Dan, who is 40, and Lisa, who is 30, has shown clear signs of toxicity over their seven years of marriage. Dan has become frustrated with Lisa's pretentious remarks and passive-aggressive attitude, while Lisa is exhausted by Dan's persistent negativity and controlling nature. “Can we pretend to be happy for just one weekend?” speaks volumes from Lisa’s minor attempt to enjoy this short-lived retreat. Yes, pun intended. Dan, hoping to give a meaningful farewell, prepares what he believes will be his wife's "last meal." However, this well-intentioned gesture sparks further disagreement, leading to another heated exchange during an otherwise beautiful sunset dinner by the lake. So, what has caused all this resentment and animosity?
As each of them launches their mastery of best kill methods, Dan and Lisa are forced to discuss the obligatory elephant in the room: infidelity. While engaged in a hilarious competition to see who can play the widowed spouse most convincingly, they miss a crucial point about these showdowns: neither is willing to surrender without a fight.
The couple relentlessly attack each other, escalating to shotgun fire and vicious knife jabs. Suddenly, we are introduced to three outstandingly savage criminals who take this domestic disturbance up 10 notches into terrifying territory. Dan and Lisa, now held captive by the newcomers, must choose between sacrificing one another or working together to outsmart their captors and survive this outrageous ordeal. Can they work together? Is there still trust between this husband and wife?
All the while, jokes and inconceivable grim wit, preys on our minds during an uncomfortably disturbing rape game, a potential death by lawnmower, and other crazy mayhem which I did NOT see coming in a Jason Segel movie. It’s frenzied fun with a predictable outcome but who cares when you are in the midst of incredible blood-soaked hilarity from start to finish! This is a keeper and a must-watch for fans of outrageously funny and horrendously gross movie mayhem.
