I am a sucker for a good period piece film. Add in some bloody battles, monsters and Monty Python humor, and I’m all in!
Once again, the Mahal brothers (Sonny and Michael) have delivered an offbeat horror film complete with an incredible cast. Always remember to go into a Mahal Empire film with little to no background, so you’ll appreciate the development (and unpredictable twists!)
The ancient town of Veroka has been ferociously battling an onslaught of cretins. Most notably, the infamous Bone Devil has been massacring King Samuel’s army, leaving the town in petrified fear and hopelessness. But alas, with the presence of a severely deformed Sigurd (more excellence from Wells!) to a campfire of locals deep in the woods, tales of murderous rampages by a slew of land beasts develop from this pained stranger who has clearly been through hell and back.
The iconic myth of The Bone Devil terrorizing the people of Veroka results in both concern and some raucous laughter. It’s hard to ignore the amusement on the faces of those who have led a cushier life, not believing these fables that have been circulating for over a millennium.
Until now.
Sigurd was a member of The Lost Blades, a group of monster/demon hunters commissioned by King Samuel to save his kingdom with less bloodshed than losing another unprepared militia in the darkness. They venture into the unknown with an air of cockiness and valor, ready to take on the cruelest of all beasts. Through the terror, this indiscriminate devil dominates even the strongest and organized warriors. But don’t close your eyes, or you’ll miss out on some very decent splatter.
Throughout Devil’s Knight, there is betrayal, uncovered secrets, plenty of bloody slayings and all served up with a hefty glass of comedy in the most distraught moments. Just to lighten the mood from the despair we are expecting – it’s warranted and accepted with a clever snarkiness that I definitely appreciated!
