Another screening night…another vampire film.
But one guarantee I’ve noticed when watching movies featuring Mike Ferguson – he never disappoints!
Night Carnage is nothing new: we have a modern-day “Dracula” named Michael Connor, who develops a love interest for a beautiful young woman, Tess; there is a generational bloodline called The Knights’ Society derived through the infamous Van Helsing family, passed down onto Marcus (great to see Baker Chase Powell again!) to lead the vampire hunter brigade; plenty of missing persons reports spreading around town… Oh! And a werewolf. Now, how can I forget that one?
With the characters lined up in a colorful array of energetic bewilderment, the zippy one liners prevail - mostly from strong-arm henchman, Adian (the always charming Ferguson!) while the sexual tension surmounts between the lusty Connor and professional dating-blogger, Tess at the trendy restaurant, Renfield’s Place. Yes, there are all sorts of whimsical puns and ongoing monster humor laid out for our enjoyment. As the slick bloodsucker indulges himself on nightly beauty meals, Tess does the same, but in a more umm….unkempt and messy disorder. Luckily, her sidekick cousin, Laura frequently visits to sit in awe of her “hairy” kin and even tidy up the night’s chaos after Tess’ appetite is aggressively triggered.
Must be great to have a helpful family member just a stone throws away!
Meanwhile, bar-owner/macabre collector Marcus has been tracking the mild-mannered vampire Connor who slaughtered his great, great grandfather many decades back, holding tight to his deathbed dad’s final request: continue the mission, and vindicate the Van Helsing name.
During Marcus’ turn as Tess’ date du jour (yes, at Renfield’s once again), Connor finally approaches the confident woman and dazzles her into a dance, and dinner. Much to the disappointment of Marcus, he realizes the true identity of this mystery man and engages his team in a final showdown. With the steadfast love story kept front and center during the ensuing bloodbath, there’s no right or wrong way to end this little jaunt amongst the undead and local residential beasts.
Night Carnage isn’t a new concept to fanger films, but it’ll give you a chuckle during the engaging 80 minutes of some hokey fun.
